Real Estate.  Joel has extensive experience in both commercial and residential real estate.  His services include assisting both buyers and sellers in all phases of the purchase process.  He also assists clients with matters involving zoning issues, the Land Division Act, homeowner and condominium association issues, riparian rights, title disputes and construction liens.

Civil Litigation.    Over the past decade Joel has successfully tried a wide variety of cases at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal courts.  He is dedicated to keeping his clients informed every step of the way, and their best interests are always the primary focus in how he handles every case.

Business Law.  Joel is dedicated to learning and understanding his business clients’ needs and works as a team with them to develop and implement positive, successful and cost-effective solutions to their legal issues.  He has extensive experience in contract formation, negotiation and review.  When business disputes arise for his clients, Joel’s exceptional negotiation skills and broad litigation experience ensure that his clients’ rights, interests and assets are well-protected. 

Employment Law.  Joel knows that in the employment arena, the best offense is a great defense.  That’s why he advises his business clients on the policies and procedures they can put in place to protect themselves from costly and time-consuming employee-related lawsuits.  Joel is dedicated to keeping his clients up-to-date on the ever-changing federal and state laws that pertain to the employee/employer relationship.  He has conducted numerous employment law seminars for various west Michigan area Chambers of Commerce.

Charitable Organizations. West Michigan is a very philanthropic community with many people wanting to help others through organizations that qualify for tax deductible contributions under the Internal Revenue Code. Joel assists such individuals in establishing the appropriate not-for-profit corporation and qualifying the organization as a charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Municipal Law.   Joel serves as counsel to various local municipalities and provides services in the areas of employment relations, including personnel matters and civil rights matters; planning, zoning, and related land use matters; ordinance and resolution review, interpretation, and drafting; and property tax matters, including annual assessments and special assessments

Joel and his wife, Renee, reside in Hudsonville with their 3 children.  They are active in their church, Fellowship Reformed Church of Hudsonville, where Joel has served as Vice-President of Consistory, Chair of Deacons, and as a member of the Executive Committee.  Joel served as the first President of the combined Grandville/Jenison Chamber of Commerce, and has served on the Board of Directors of other non-profit corporations, including Love, INC.  When he’s not in the office, Joel can be found hanging out with his family, coaching or watching a baseball game, or wandering along the Manistee River.
